Title: Washing Line

Name: Samantha Cappleman, Age: 32, Occupation: Business Manager

Story

I took this photograph whilst taking an evening course in photography. I was exploring the use of depth of field and shot this image in Happy Valley from the 8th floor of my sister's apartment building. The unusual perspective of looking down from the washing line, rather than looking up from the street, plus the empty, washing-less poles lend a sense of loss to the image, which is surrounded by the blur of city lights.

Memory

I first came to Hong Kong when I was 14 and my earliest memories were of the washing hanging from the high rise apartment buildings. Although this can still be seen, a lot of the older apartment buildings are slowly disappearing and new high rises have restrictions for how and where washing is hung. I imagine in the future that no washing will be seen in residential areas and that cleaning clothes will be an all-in-one process.
